Hollywood heavyweights Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are stirring up controversy with their campaign to establish Texas as a new entertainment hub. The Oscar-winning actors, both proud Texans, recently launched the “True to Texas” initiative, urging state legislators to offer incentives for film and television productions to relocate from California. However, their bold move has sparked backlash from industry insiders who accuse them of betraying the town that made them famous.

    Hollywood Insiders Call Them ‘Turncoats’

The promotional video for “True to Texas” features Harrelson and McConaughey reprising their True Detective roles, alongside Texas natives Billy Bob Thornton, Renée Zellweger, and Dennis Quaid. In the clip, McConaughey suggests that Hollywood is “a fading memory,” while Harrelson argues that investing in Texas could transform it into a major film industry hub.

While their campaign was intended to be lighthearted, it landed poorly with many in Hollywood, especially following the devastating Los Angeles wildfires that destroyed homes and displaced thousands. Industry insiders say the timing of their announcement felt like a slap in the face to those struggling to keep film jobs in California.

“A lot of people are furious,” an insider revealed. “The industry is already facing challenges with productions moving out of L.A., and now two of Hollywood’s own are openly encouraging more of that.”

Harrelson and McConaughey Absent from Hollywood Events

The backlash has been swift. Industry figures reportedly view the duo as hypocrites, pointing out that their fame and fortune were built in Hollywood. The controversy has also fueled speculation about why Harrelson and McConaughey have been noticeably absent from recent red carpet events.

“They haven’t been showing up to award shows or big industry gatherings,” another source noted. “It’s like they know they’d be walking into a storm of criticism if they did.”

Some insiders believe that the move could hurt their standing in the industry. Others, however, argue that they are simply adapting to a changing landscape. With more productions leaving California due to rising costs and regulations, Texas—already home to shows like Yellowstone and Walker—is emerging as a viable alternative.

Will Texas Become the Next Entertainment Capital?

Despite the backlash, the True Detective stars remain committed to their cause. They argue that shifting some of the industry’s focus to Texas could create jobs and revitalize filmmaking outside of Hollywood.

“Woody and Matthew aren’t the only ones looking for alternatives,” a film industry analyst said. “The reality is that many studios are already moving productions elsewhere, and Texas has the resources to support that growth.”

Whether their efforts will succeed or permanently damage their Hollywood standing remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: Harrelson and McConaughey have shaken up the entertainment industry with their push for a Lone Star film empire.
