Matthew Lawrence dished on his “Brotherly Love Podcast” about a young Ryan Reynolds clashing with producers on the 1998 film “Boltneck.” He claimed the “Deadpool” star upset an Oscar-nominated crew with his on-set antics. Lawrence, 45, said Reynolds ignored direction, leading to frustration behind the scenes.
    Tension on ‘Boltneck’ Set
Lawrence recalled Reynolds walking off set, wanting to do his own thing during “Boltneck” filming. He said producers got upset and told Reynolds his style mimicked a bad Jim Carrey impression, not what they hired him for. In the movie, Lawrence played a nerd reviving Reynolds’ bullied character.
The “Mrs. Doubtfire” actor added that Reynolds pushed back, insisting he’d stick to his approach. Producers, including Paul Colichman and Mark R. Harris, fresh off an Oscar win for “Gods and Monsters,” aimed for a sci-fi vibe like “Donnie Darko.” However, Lawrence noted Reynolds tried to “Deadpool” the script instead.
    Creative Control Struggles
Lawrence witnessed a meeting where the director confronted Reynolds over his behavior. He claimed the crew, still buzzing from their 1999 Oscar nod, lost hope in Reynolds, predicting he’d go nowhere. Today, Lawrence laughs off that call, given Reynolds’ rise to fame.
He suggested the film flopped partly due to Reynolds’ conflicts with the team. Page Six reached out to Reynolds’ reps but got no response. Meanwhile, Lawrence gave him credit, saying he’s clearly matured since those early days.
The story surfaced amid Reynolds’ legal drama with Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni over “It Ends With Us.” Baldoni’s lawsuit accuses Reynolds of yelling at him and, with Lively, rewriting scenes. Lawrence’s tale paints a picture of a younger Reynolds already resisting control.
