The Kremlin stated Wednesday it must receive a briefing from U.S. officials on Ukraine ceasefire discussions in Saudi Arabia before commenting. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said U.S. leaders are expected to provide details soon, while a high-level call between President Putin and former President Trump remains under consideration.
According to Reuters, in a statement released on Wednesday, the Kremlin announced that it required a briefing from the US regarding the outcome of discussions between the United States and Ukraine that took place in Saudi Arabia before it could comment on whether or not a proposed ceasefire in Ukraine was acceptable to Russia.
On Tuesday, Ukraine announced that it was prepared to back a proposal from the United States for a truce with Russia that would last for thirty days. Additionally, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States will now take the offer to Russia.
Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin, stated that Moscow anticipated receiving a briefing on Tuesday’s meetings with Ukraine in Jeddah from Rubio and Mike Waltz, the National Security Adviser for the White House. This might take place in the coming days.
Peskov also stated that he did not rule out the prospect of a phone contact between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, which he stated could be arranged very quickly in the event that it was required.
When asked during his daily briefing call with reporters whether the proposed ceasefire of thirty days would be beneficial to Russia or not and whether Moscow would link a prospective ceasefire to other demands, such as the removal of Western sanctions on Moscow, Peskov responded as follows:
“You are getting a little ahead of yourself. Yesterday, when talking to the press, both Rubio and Waltz said that they would pass on detailed information to us through various channels about the essence of the conversation that took place in Jeddah. First, we must receive this information.”
He stated that there were plans to make contact with the Americans in the days ahead, and during those days, they anticipate receiving all of the information that they require.
