Luigi Mangione, accused of gunning down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in a brazen Manhattan ambush, returns to court Friday. The 26-year-old faces murder and terrorism charges amid a divisive uproar, with some hailing him as a folk hero against steep healthcare costs.

Luigi Mangione, the individual who is accused of shooting and killing health insurance executive Brian Thompson on a street in Manhattan in December, is scheduled to appear in court in New York on Friday afternoon, Reuters reports. He is being charged with state murder as well as terrorism.

On December 23, Mangione, who is 26 years old, entered a plea of not guilty to an 11-count indictment that implicated him in the commission of firearms violations and murder as an act of terrorism.

Mangione could be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release if he is found guilty. Now, he is being held in a federal penitentiary in the borough of Brooklyn.

On December 4, Thompson, the former chief executive officer of UnitedHealth Group’s, opens new tab insurance unit UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot outside of a hotel in Midtown Manhattan, where the firm was gathered for an investor conference.

Americans were intrigued by the heinous murder and the subsequent manhunt that lasted for five days.

Despite the fact that governmental officials have denounced the death, there are some Americans who have hailed Mangione as a folk hero. These individuals are concerned about the high expense of healthcare and the ability of insurers to refuse to pay for certain treatments.

The federal government has also filed a criminal case against Mangione, accusing him of stalking and killing Thompson on four separate counts.

It is possible that he will be sentenced to death in that case; however, he has not yet made a plea in that case.

This month, Avraham Moskowitz, a lawyer who has experience working on cases involving the death penalty, became a member of Mangione’s defense team.

During his most recent court appearance, the attorneys representing Mangione in the state case voiced fear that he might not receive a fair trial due to the extensive exposure and statements made by officials criticizing him.
