According to Kanye West, a startling occurrence involving his 9-year-old son, Saint, inspired his next album, Bully. Reflecting on how the incident helped him to rethink the idea of bullying, the 46-year-old rapper told the anecdote during a chat with fellow rapper Justin Laboy.
West said Saint had been kicking another child out of the way while he was playing with another youngster. Interested in his son’s behavior, the rapper questioned him about it. Saint’s answer shocked him; he said he acted because the other child seemed “weak.”
West stopped and considered the deeper meaning behind the word “bully” at the unexpected response. Eventually, it became the title of his much-awaited album, which will be presented on his daughter North’s 11th birthday.
Often finding inspiration in his own life when writing, West shares four children with his ex-wife Kim Kardashian: North, 11, Saint, 9, Chicago, 7, and Psalm, 5. His most recent work follows this trend, forming his creative vision from his experiences as a parent.
West continues to be heavily involved in co-parenting his children even after divorcing Kardashian in 2021. He regularly spends special times with them, including public appearances at musical events.
West invited his kids on stage during a recent Vultures 2 listening engagement in Hainan, China, so they could participate in the experience. As they waved to the audience, held hands, and danced with their father, a video from the occasion captured touching moments.
In the meantime, his daughter, North, has been outspoken about her respect for his approach. In an earlier interview, she mentioned Tyler, the Creator, and 1990s streetwear styles, as well as her father, as one of her major fashion inspirations.
West’s development as a father and artist is still clearly visible as Bully approaches publication. His songs still reflect his path through fatherhood and are shaped by his own experiences, therefore transcending mere artistic expression.
